A Xiaomi SU7 Ultra was involved in a high-speed collision on Tianfu Avenue, Chengdu, at around 3:16 a.m. on October 13, igniting shortly after striking a median.
Bystander videos show several motorists stopping to help. Attempts to break the side windows with elbows and shoe soles were unsuccessful, and a fire extinguisher aimed at the driver’s area could not be used effectively as flames and heat spread rapidly, preventing closer access.
Online speculation claims the doors were locked, but this has not been officially confirmed. Local authorities and Xiaomi Auto have not yet issued statements. The cause and full circumstances remain under investigation.
At press time, Xiaomi’s shares were down about 6.5%.
